Ho and James were selected for excellence in aerospace in their specialty area.
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) recently announced that AE School professors Koki Ho and Kai James have been elected to the 2025 Class of Associate Fellows.
“I’m elated to see Professors Koki Ho and Kai James have received this prestigious honor. Our faculty continue to impact aerospace engineering through the strength of their world-class research programs. I am excited to see what they will do next,” said Mitchell Walker, AE School Chair.
Associate Fellows are those who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.
AIAA will formally honor and induct the class at its AIAA Associate Fellows Recognition Ceremony and Dinner on January 8 in Orlando during its 2025 AIAA Science and Technology Forum and Exposition (AIAA SciTech Forum).
Koki Ho, Dutton-Ducoffe Professor
Ho’s research is not just about the present, but also about shaping the future of space missions. His work focuses on developing modeling and optimization methods for rigorous space mission analysis and design. His research interests involve network modeling for campaign-level space mission design; optimization and probabilistic modeling for in-space logistics infrastructure design and operations; design, deployment, and maintenance of mega-scale satellite constellations; and sensor management for space domain awareness.
Ho currently serves as the Space System Design Group (SSOG) director. He was recently tapped to guide a NASA-funded in-space servicing and repair consortium and was selected for an Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Space University Research Initiative grant of $5 million to enhance logistic frameworks for space. His work has shaped the planning and execution of missions involving multiple spacecraft, vehicles, and reusable infrastructure components. In addition, he has been the recipient of the National Science Foundation Career Award, the DARPA Young Faculty Award, and the NASA Early Career Faculty Award.
Associate Professor Kai James
Associate Professor James’ research is driving innovation and ensuring efficiency in aerospace. His work centers on computational mechanics and multidisciplinary design optimization, focusing on problems involving complex, nonlinear structures and mechanisms. He is particularly interested in developing novel algorithms that leverage high-fidelity computational models and numerical optimization methods. James heads up the Design Innovation and Computational Engineering (DICE) Lab, which creates novel algorithms and computational tools for the design and synthesis of complex mechanical systems.
Some of his major research projects include the aerostructure optimization of electric aircraft wings, the design synthesis of self-actuating morphable structures containing active materials, and generative adversarial neural networks for design automation. He is also a National Center for Supercomputing Applications Faculty Fellow. He received the Scott White Aerospace Engineering Fellow Award in 2020, the National Science Foundation Career Award in 2018, and the AIAA Teacher of the Year in 2017. He was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University before joining Georgia Tech in 2022.
